How to install and run Chrome under root account in Ubuntu

This tutorial explains how to install Chrome web browser in Ubuntu Linux through Ubuntu Software Center and through Debian package step by step. By default Chrome does not start under root user account. This tutorial also provides a fix to run Chrome browser under root user account in Ubuntu.

Installing Chrome from Ubuntu Software Center

Open software center

ubuntu software center

Search for chrome

ubuntu software center search chrome

Select chrome from list and click on install button

Installation required root privilege. Authenticate with super user password. Super user is the user which we create during the installation.

Installation process would take few minutes.

Once installation finished close the software center.

To use chrome clicks on dash home button.

ubuntu enable sound dash home

Search for chrome and click on chrome icon

ubuntu chrome launch

Chrome browse will be ready to use.

Installing Chrome from Debian package

Go to the official download page of chrome and click on download

Select appropriate version of chrome and click on Accept and install

Save file

ubuntu download chrome save file

Open the containing folder once the downloading complete

Select file and do right click. From right click options click on Open with software center

Click on install

Running Chrome from root user account

By default google-chrome will run as under the normal user. You would get following error if you run chrome as root user

Google Chrome can not be run as root.
Please start Google Chrome as a normal user.
run as root, you must specify an alternate
--user-data-dir for storage of profile information.

To run chrome as root user follow these steps

Open /opt/google/chrome folder

open google-chrome file

ubuntu chrome run as root file location

Append last line of file with '--user-data-dir $HOME'

Actual line

exec -a "$0" "$HERE/chrome" "$@"

Appended line

exec -a "$0" "$HERE/chrome" "$@" --user-data-dir $HOME

Save and close the file

ubuntu chrome run as root modified file

Now run chrome as root user also.
