This tutorial provides a step by step guide of internet sharing in windows XP workgroup network.

Instead of buying an individual internet connection for each computer in workgroup network, we can buy a single internet connection and share it on all PCs. Internet sharing allows us to use a single connection for all workgroup computers.

For this article we assume that you have a running workgroup network and at least one computer from network is directly connected with the internet. If you haven’t setup a workgroup or looking for a way to setup the new workgroup we suggests you to go through the previous articles of this category. This category is organized in start to finish way. In starting tutorials we explained how to setup a new workgroup. In middle articles we present a way to add new computers in workgroup.

Internet sharing via network setup wizard in Windows XP

Sharing via network setup wizard is the easiest way of internet sharing. All you need to do is connect the system with internet when you run the Network setup wizard. Rest will be done automatically. First window of network setup wizard also indicates the same thing.

No additional settings are required on other computers of workgroup. If workgroup is properly setup, they will connect with internet automatically.

Any new internet connection will not be share automatically. We need to share it manually. In next section we will share a new dial up internet connection in windows XP workgroup network.

How to share a dial up internet connection in windows XP

Select My Network Places and do right click. From right click context menu click Properties

We cannot share active internet connection. Disconnect if you are currently connected with internet. Select the dialup connection which you want to share and do right click. From right click context menu click properties

Switch to Sharing tab. We have three options. First option is used to share the internet connection. Remaining two options are used to control the sharing. In a dial up type internet connection if we uncheck the second option, network users will only be able to access the internet until this system is connected with internet. Select option one and two and click Ok.

Shared icon and status will be appeared on this connection.

In a workgroup network no additional settings are required on a member computer to access the shared internet.
