Small Office / Home Office Architectures Explained

SOHO stands for Small Office / Home Office. It is a network architecture and classification of a business site with a relatively small number of devices. It describes the devices you need to build a small network and defines the standards and guidelines you need to follow to connect them.

SOHO refers to a design and implementation that has few network-specific requirements. It is suitable for environments where networks are used for daily activities such as working from home, surfing the internet, or running a small business. It requires essential hardware such as an Ethernet switch, an access point, and a router.

An Ethernet switch connects end devices. Depending on available switch ports, features, and functions, Ethernet switches are available in many variations. SOHO does not require a higher-end or multifunction switch. In most cases, an essential switch with a few ports is sufficient. In some cases, it may require a few more switch ports for scalability. In that case, you consider an entry-level switch.

An access point connects wireless devices to the network. In recent times, the use of wireless devices, especially in SOHO, has rapidly increased. An access point lets you connect these devices to the network.

A router connects different IP networks. A large network usually has many IP subnets. Routers connect these subnets. Generally, SOHO does not have multiple subnets. It uses routers to connect to the Internet.

Since SOHO uses limited functionalities of an Ethernet switch, an access point, and a router, a new type of device is designed. It is called a wireless router. It includes all essential features you need to build a SOHO network. It contains a few switch ports, wireless dongles, and an inbuilt router. When you purchase a broadband Internet connection, the ISP provides this device as a CPE (customer premises equipment) device. You can use it to connect your wireless devices to the Internet. It also has a few switch ports that let you connect your wired devices to the Internet.
